This manual aims to provide mental health professionals with a guide to the assessment and treatment of psychological trauma associated with child abduction in two distinct populations: (1) children recovered from non-family abductions and their families and (2) children recovered from family abductions and their families.
Abstract
The manual aims to assist mental health professionals in first stabilizing family units upon recovery of missing children and subsequently supporting these family units and the returned children in recovering from the emotional trauma of child abduction. The model treatment is intended for use by mental health professionals with both limited and extensive experience in working with recovered children and their families. The two potential user groups include clinicians who want concise descriptions of issues and interventions and clinicians and scholars who are also interested in the research associated with treatment issues and interventions. Individual chapters cover the nature of the problem of child abduction, governmental responses, and treatment development; the ABCX model for understanding trauma effects on children and their families; issues and interventions for children and families in each type of abduction; and the models’ limitations and future needs. Case examples; appended literature review, sample protocol, and forms; and approximately 200 references
