This report presents the features and manufacturer claims for Katana Forensics' Lantern Version 2.04 - which can recover and examine data from mobile digital devices that use the native Mac OS X operating system - and results are presented from the performance testing of Lantern by the National Institute of Justice's Electronic Crime Technology Center of Excellence.

Abstract

Lantern's manufacturer advertises it as "the most cost-effective Mac-based tool for the IOS Devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad)." In addition, Katana claims that its tools are developed so they can be used by both law enforcement and civilian examiners. The tested features of Lantern performed as advertised by the manufacturer. It captured the logical data from the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. It does not capture a full physical image, nor does it claim such a function for Lantern. Of the data captured, however, the output of Lantern is impressive, according the testing report. It is one of the few, if not the only tool, that allows the examiner to hear the voice-mail messages recovered from the device, along with the associated metadata. The voice-mail messages were recovered from the device itself and from no other source. The application is easy to use, and the interface layout is logical and intuitive. Extensive figures
