Faith-Based Organizations

Because faith-based organizations are asked to participate in many community-based efforts, consider partnering with those that will benefit most when your Weed and Seed community becomes a safer and more productive place. Begin by identifying neighborhood churches, mosques, and synagogues; those that have been vandalized and those that already serve your target audience are ideal. Faith-based organizations often have a direct line of communication with the residents in your community and may be willing to cohost events with you.

Faith-based organizations might also be willing to let you use their bulletins, newsletters, and Web sites to promote Weed and Seed meetings and other activities. Faith leaders might also invite you to address their congregations during regularly scheduled meetings or activities. It takes hard work and commitment to forge a cordial and fruitful partnership with a faith-based organization, but the payoff can be substantial and long lasting.

Communities in Action
In Fort Wayne, IN, a Weed and Seed initiative called One Voice, One Vision collaborated with local churches to host Justice Sunday. Advertising in local African-American newspapers invited readers to visit 1 of 23 congregations to hear the Justice Sunday Proclamation from the city of Fort Wayne Office of the Mayor. Attendees also learned about the Weed and Seed initiative and discovered ways to participate in programs that strengthen families, mentor returning offenders, and assist youth in avoiding gang and criminal activity.
