III. Drug and Crime Problems in Participants’ Residential Neighborhoods

From introductory statements by focus group participants, it became evident that participants’ drug problems varied by the city neighborhoods in which they resided and by racial or ethnic background. This theme was developed in the focus groups by asking participants to describe the neighborhood drug and crime problems of which they were aware. Participants were also asked to describe the highest crime and drug areas in their cities. The result was a sort of informal mapping of the high drug-crime areas in each location.

answer graphicAn overall theme in the responses of focus group participants across the sites appeared to be the presence of a great deal of drug-related crime in their residential neighborhoods. Most participants recounted examples of crime incidents that they considered fairly routine in their daily lives. Although much of the crime that was mentioned was property-oriented, shootings, robberies, and domestic violence were also cited by participants as common in their neighborhoods.
