Introduction
Until recently, researchers studying
how family and community factors
influence violent victimization among youth1
faced a significant hurdle: insufficient
data. As a result, the link between these
factors and violent victimization remained largely unexamined. Now, however,
because of a special release of National
Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)
data from the U.S. Census Bureau and
the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS),
researchers can explore this important
issue in a new light. For the first time,
factors associated with violent victimization are receiving the same critical
attention that has been focused on violent offending. Drawing on newly available NCVS data, this Bulletin offers a unique analysis of how family and
community characteristics affect violent
victimization among U.S. youth ages 1217.
