State custody rates in 1999
showed a broad range—from 96 to 632 per 100,000 juveniles
The U.S. custody rate did not change much from 1997 to
1999
In 1999, the overall custody rate in the United States was just 1% greater
than the 1997 rate. However, there was substantial variation from state
to state. In 20 states, rates declined or remained stable; rates increased
in the rest of the country.
