Appropriate Target Populations
The original Strengthening Families Program has been culturally
adapted and tested with urban and rural families with elementary school-age
children. (Kumpfer, 1995; Aktan, Kumpfer, and Turner, 1996). SFP has proven
successful with high-risk children whose parents are not drug or alcohol
abusers and with families of diverse backgrounds. Separate training manuals
have been developed for African American families. The African American
manuals contain the same basic content as the original SFP but have culturally
appropriate pictures and language with some specific information regarding
African American families and communities.
