Juvenile arrests
disproportionately involved minorities
The racial composition of the juvenile
population in 1999 was 79% white, 15%
black, and 5% other races, with most
Hispanics classified as white. In contrast,
57% of juvenile arrests for violent
crimes involved white youth and 41%
involved black youth. To a lesser extent,
black youth were also overrepresented
in juvenile property crime arrests, with
27% of these arrests involving black
youth and 69% involving white youth.
