Administrator Flores Testifies Before Senate Judiciary Committee

On December 5, 2007, OJJDP Administrator J. Robert Flores served as lead witness providing testimony before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, which conducted a hearing on reauthorization of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act. (OJJDP)

 
Assisting Victims of Intimate Partner Stalking

In recognition of National Stalking Awareness Month, OVC, in conjunction with OVW, will host a Web Forum Guest Host Session on best practices for serving intimate partner stalking victims. Join Michelle Garcia, Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime Stalking Resource Center, on January 9, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET for the discussion. (OVC)

Antigang Proposals Sought
Application deadline: February 20, 2008
Applications for Research on Crime Prevention and Control: Focus on Gangs are now being accepted. The grant seeks research and evaluation projects that advance the understanding and practice of gang prevention, intervention, and enforcement. Applicants should provide practical knowledge to support improved antigang efforts. (NIJ)
 
Cost-Effective Pretrial and Jail Alternatives Sought

Application deadline: February 15, 2008
This NIJ grant, Research on Safe Community Release for Pretrial and Jail Populations, seeks research and evaluation of pretrial and jail options that promote cost-effective alternatives to detention and incarceration and protect public safety. NIJ has identified the pretrial and jail release phases of the criminal justice system as an understudied research priority. (NIJ)

 
Funding for Tribal Governments Program Available

Grants.gov registration deadline: January 30, 2008
Application deadline: February 6, 2008
OVW is accepting applications for the FY 2008 Grants to Indian Tribal Governments Program. This program provides funding to Indian tribal governments to help them respond to American Indian and Alaska Native victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. (OVW)

 
Funds Available: Assisting in Solving Cold Cases
Application deadline: February 1, 2008
Funding is now available for Solving Cold Cases With DNA. States and units of local government can apply for assistance to identify, review, and investigate violent crime cold cases that have the potential to be solved using DNA analysis and to locate and analyze biological evidence associated with these cases. Research on Human Trafficking Grant Available

Application deadline: February 12, 2008
NIJ is seeking applications for Research on Human Trafficking. Research should be related to labor trafficking, demand reduction for sex trafficking and commercial sex acts, and identifying and addressing issues faced by trafficking victims. Applications should highlight research with direct, immediate, and obvious implications for policy and practice in the United States. (NIJ)

 
Research on Policing Grant Released

Application deadline: February 12, 2008
NIJ is seeking applications to conduct Research on Policing to improve law enforcement policies and operations at the state and local levels. Because most police departments and other local criminal justice agencies and groups have limited resources, it is especially important to determine the effectiveness of police department policies. (NIJ)

 
Three OVC Fellowship Program Grants Now Available

Application deadline: January 10, 2008
OVC will award three grants of up to $125,000 to individuals through the 2008 Victim Assistance Fellowship Program. This program will address gaps in services for crime victims by developing training, technical assistance, and public awareness resources for practitioners serving victims of crime. (OVC)

 
Tribal Courts Grant Announcement Released

Application deadline: February 7, 2008

The FY 2008 grant announcement for the Tribal Courts Assistance Program includes three separate categories under which tribes may apply. BJA administers grants to support the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal judicial systems. (BJA)

Enhancing Portable X-Ray Systems
"Portable X-Ray Systems for Use in Bomb Identification" (NCJ 218586, 29 pp.) establishes performance requirements and testing methods for portable x-ray systems used in bomb identification. It contains definitions to help readers use and understand the specifications and provides field testing procedures for and mechanical drawings of several tests. (NIJ) order print copy
 
Fact Sheet Shows Reduced Youth Drug Use
"Youth Drug Use Declines" (NCJ 220942, 2 pp.), an online fact sheet, provides an overview of youth drug use trends from 2001-2007, showing that antidrug strategies being implemented at the federal, state, and local levels are working. It is reported that there are 860,000 fewer young people using drugs today than there were in 2001. (ONDCP)
 
Measuring Effectiveness of Grant Programs Report Released

The "2006 Biennial Report to Congress on the Effectiveness of Grant Programs Under the Violence Against Women Act" (NCJ 221036, 155 pp.) presents findings based on projects funded by OVW discretionary grant programs. The report covers the period July 1, 2003, through June 30, 2005. The grant programs are designed to increase criminal enforcement, provide necessary services, and support prevention efforts. New Report Examines Stalking

"Report to Congress on Stalking and Domestic Violence, 2005 Through 2006" (NCJ 220827, 7 pp.) provides an overview of statistics covering this topic. Appendices A and B accompany the report. A summary of training and outreach efforts undertaken by the OVW-funded Stalking Resource Center is also included. (OVW)

 
Report Provides High School Dropout Data

"Numbers and Rates of Public High School Dropouts: School Year 2004--05," released by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, draws on diverse sources to provide data on the numbers and rates of public school students who dropped out of high school in school years 2002--03, 2003--04, and 2004--05. Conference To Address Drugs and Violence

On March 26-29, 2008, in Miami, Florida, Youth Crime Watch of America will hold the 19th National Youth Crime Prevention Conference and International Forum. Designed for youth ages 12-22 and the adults who work with them, the conference will address the prevention of crime, drug use, and violence. As customary for this conference, youth participants will play a significant role. (OJJDP)
