Administrative Officer Position Available

Application deadline: June 4, 2008
The National Institute of Corrections is seeking an Administrative Officer. The incumbent will be responsible for the management of support activities in NIC's Washington, DC, office. Some of these activities involve training, technical assistance, cooperative agreements, and information development. (NIC)

 
Celebrate Safe Communities

BJA, the National Crime Prevention Council, and the National Sheriffs' Association have joined together to Celebrate Safe Communities and kick off October as Crime Prevention Month through recognizing the vital role residents play in keeping their neighborhoods safe. (BJA)

 
Medal of Valor Nomination Period Open

Application period: May 30 to July 31, 2008
The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is the highest national award for valor by a public safety officer. The medal is awarded by the President to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage in protecting or saving human lives. Submit an online application at the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Web site. (BJA)

 
ONDCP Launches Redesigned Web Site

The Office of National Drug Control Policy's Web site has a new look. The newly redesigned site features information on national drug policy, facts and figures about drugs, state and local resources, and discussion forums. The new site also includes a policy focus section, blog news, and a media center. (ONDCP)

 
Site Coordinators Needed for Upcoming Broadcast

Registration deadline: July 2, 2008
NIC is looking for site coordinators for "Women and Work: Gender Responsivity and Workforce Development," to be broadcast live on September 24-25, 2008. Training will be held via satellite or via the Internet on July 9, 2008. (NIC)

 
Victim Justice Position Announced

Application deadline: June 13, 2008
OVC is accepting applications for a Victim Justice Program Specialist position. Responsibilities include reviewing activities of grantees and contractors to ensure compliance and identifying successful activities for replication in other areas. Applicants Sought for Gang Prevention Program

Application deadline: June 13, 2008
OJJDP's FY 2008 Gang Prevention Coordination Assistance Program provides funding to enhance coordination of federal, state, and local resources in support of community partnerships implementing two or more of the following antigang strategies: primary prevention, secondary prevention, gang intervention, and gang enforcement. Byrne Competitive Solicitation Announced

Application deadline: June 11, 2008
BJA is seeking applicants for the FY 2008 Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Grant Program: National Initiatives. Applicants are solicited under five categories: preventing crime and drug abuse, enhancing local law enforcement, enhancing local courts, enhancing local corrections and offender reentry, and facilitating justice information sharing. Enhancing Effectiveness of Correctional Organizations

Application deadline: June 19, 2008
"Identifying the Characteristics of High Performing Correctional Organizations" is a proposal for qualified organizations, groups, or individuals to enter into a cooperative agreement for a 12-month developmental phase of this new initiative. The project will focus on developing a methodology to build strengths and to identify and enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of correctional facilities. (NIC)

 
Grant Available To Help Tribal Correctional Facilities

Application deadline: June 12, 2008
BJA is soliciting applicants for the Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Program in an effort to help tribes cost effectively plan and renovate facilities associated with the incarceration and rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders subject to tribal jurisdiction. (BJA)

 
Grant Focuses on Electronic and Cyber Crime

Application deadline: June 23, 2008
The Electronic and Cyber Crime Training and Technical Assistance Program serves communities by providing training, technical assistance, and related support that leverages cooperative efforts between electronic and cyber crime training and technical assistance service providers. (BJA)

 
OJJDP Announces Mentoring Solicitations

Application deadline: June 20, 2008
OJJDP has announced two FY 2008 mentoring solicitations: National Mentoring Programs and Strengthening Youth Mentoring through Community Partnerships.(OJJDP)

 
Tribal Juvenile Accountability Discretionary Grants Funding Available

Application deadline: June 13, 2008
OJJDP is seeking applicants under its FY 2008 Tribal Youth Program's Juvenile Accountability Discretionary Grants solicitation to develop and implement programs that hold tribal youth accountable for their delinquent behavior and strengthen tribal juvenile justice systems. (OJJDP)

Guide Addresses Developing Successful Crime Analysis Units

"Enhancing the Problem-Solving Capacity of Crime Analysis Units" (NCJ 222841, 48 pp.) will help police managers ensure that their crime analysts are properly inducted into the police environment and that analytical work is fully integrated into departmental operations. The guide is organized around nine fundamental concerns that must be addressed when developing a problem-solving capacity within a crime analysis unit. (COPS)

 
June 2008 Community Policing Dispatch Coming Soon

The COPS Office's latest issue of Community Policing Dispatch will be available on June 2. Articles include an interview with a police chief about law enforcement/research/funding partnerships, COPS Office funding opportunities, internal affairs units’ community of practice, the role of agency planning and research units in promoting innovation, and new products from the Office for Victims of Crime. Publication Helps Youth Overcome Abduction Trauma

Written by five survivors of child abductions, "You're Not Alone: The Journey From Abduction to Empowerment" (NCJ 221965, 76 pp.) joins two previous OJJDP publications, "When Your Child Is Missing: A Family Survival Guide" and "What About Me? Offenders Practice Applying for Employment

NIC's Offender Workforce Development Division has developed an Online/Kiosk Employment Application Simulation software program that allows offenders to practice completing an employment application on personal computers that do not have access to the Internet. The CD-based software is compatible with the Windows® operating system. (NIC)

Jail Administration Training Available

Application deadline: June 6, 2008
Registration is open for NIC's September 7-11, 2008, Jail Administration program in Colorado. This 35-hour program will include topics such as risk management, jail standards, policies and procedures, inmate behavior management, jail staffing, budget management, and operational assessments. Training is applicable for administrators whose jails house more than 150 inmates. (NIC)
