Addressing the Needs of Victims
Application deadline: July 20, 2009
Through the Evaluation of the Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) Program solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for support of a national evaluation, including state-level analyses that identify strategies for developing, implementing, and enhancing a victim notification system that fully addresses the needs and concerns of victims. Applicants Sought for Tribal Juvenile Reentry Program
Application deadline: June 15, 2009
OJJDP seeks applications for its Tribal Juvenile Detention and Reentry Green Demonstration Program, which seeks to enhance opportunities for federally recognized tribes to provide comprehensive and quality programs for tribal youth who reside in or are being released from tribal juvenile detention centers. (OJJDP)
 
Creating a Center of Excellence
Application deadline: June 19, 2009
Funding is available for qualified applicants to establish and operate a Criminal Justice Technology Information and Sensor Systems Center of Excellence to support the research, development, testing, and evaluation process in information and sensor systems. The Center will provide testing, evaluation, and technology assistance in information technology, geospatial analysis, and sensor systems. (NIJ)
 
Deadline Extended for JAG Local Solicitation
BJA has extended the application deadline for the Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program: Local Solicitation to June 17, 2009, 8 p.m. ET. The JAG program allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a range of activities to prevent and control crime based on local needs and conditions. The deadline extension does not impact either eligibility or funding determinations. (BJA)
 
Funding Available for Bulletproof Vest Partnership
Application deadline: June 17, 2009
BJA is pleased to announce that approximately $24.7 million will be made available to law enforcement through the FY 2009 Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP). The BVP helps protect law enforcement agencies by supporting the purchase of bulletproof vests. (BJA)
 
Funding Available To Evaluate Assessment Tools
Application deadline: June 24, 2009
NIC has released a solicitation to Advance Women's Risk/Needs Assessment Instruments. Through a cooperative agreement, the selected service provider will disseminate the instruments to interested parties, provide technical assistance to jurisdictions that are considering using the tools, assist with implementation, and conduct research to validate and refine the assessment instruments. Predicting Crimes Before They Occur
Application deadline: June 15, 2009
NIJ seeks qualified applicants for the Predictive Policing Demonstration and Evaluation Program grant. Predictive policing includes strategies and tactics that improve the situational awareness of law enforcement concerning individuals or locations before criminal activity occurs. (NIJ)
 
Program Funds Tribal Youth Research and Evaluation
Application deadline: June 15, 2009
The Tribal Youth Field Initiated Research and Evaluation Program funds field initiated studies to further understanding about the experiences, strengths, and needs of tribal youth, their families, and communities, and what works to reduce their risks for delinquency and victimization. (OJJDP)
 
Program Supports Tribal Youth Mentoring Services
Application deadline: June 15, 2009
The Tribal Youth National Mentoring Program supports the development, maturation, and expansion of community programs that provide mentoring to tribal youth who are underserved due to location, shortage of mentors, emotional or behavioral challenges of the targeted population, or other situations identified by their tribe. Reviewing Forensic Science Methods
Application deadline: June 22, 2009
The Fundamental Research to Improve Understanding of the Accuracy, Reliability, and Measurement Validity of Forensic Science Disciplines solicitation requires the development of quantifiable measures of the reliability and accuracy of forensic analyses. These studies should examine various processes within forensic methods, from initial acceptance and examination of evidence for probative value and quality to final assessment of forensic results. Seeking Proposals for "Green Corrections" Report
Application deadline: June 19, 2009
Applications are now being accepted for a Green Corrections project to explore more awareness and involvement in conservation and environmental efforts by the field of corrections. The resulting report on this topic will explore "green collar" job readiness programs for offenders, environmentally friendly prison industries, and self-sustaining corrections facilities. (NIC)
 
Transforming Technology Centers for Improved Outreach
Application deadline: June 19, 2009
NIJ seeks applications to transform the current structure of Criminal Justice Technology Regional Centers to make the Centers more sustainable and effective in performing NIJ's outreach mission. For the purposes of this solicitation, criminal justice agencies include law enforcement and corrections agencies, public crime laboratories, and public agencies involved in the criminal judicial process. Tribal Juvenile Reentry TTA Provider Sought
Application deadline: June 15, 2009
The successful applicant for the Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) for Tribal Juvenile Detention and Reentry Green Program will provide specialized training and technical assistance to the grant recipients of OJJDP's Tribal Juvenile Detention and Reentry Green Demonstration Program. (OJJDP)

Federal Justice Statistics, 2006 -- Statistical Tables (NCJ 225711, 89 pp.). The Web document describes criminal case processing in the federal justice system, including arrest and booking through sentencing and corrections. (BJS)
 
Latest Drug Control Budget Summary Available
The "National Drug Control Strategy: FY 2010 Budget Summary" (NCJ 226765, 204 pp.) identifies resources and performance indicators for programs within the Executive Branch that are integral to the President's drug control policy. The Administration's plan for reducing drug use and availability includes substance abuse prevention and treatment, domestic law enforcement, and interdiction and international counterdrug support. Apply now for National Victim Assistance Academy IV, to be held August 2-7, 2009, in Louisville, Kentucky. Continuing Education Units will be awarded to participants who complete all of the requirements of the Foundation-Level Training, Professional Skill-Building Institute, or Leadership Institute. Conference Will Highlight Innovations in Crime Mapping
The 10th Crime Mapping Research Conference will be held August 19-22, 2009, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Presentations and workshops will highlight geographic principles in research, geographic applications in practice, technology demonstrations, and solutions for crime and public safety problems. Coping With Mental Illness in Jails
On July 15, 2009, the National Institute of Corrections will host "The Mentally Ill in Jail: Whose Problem Is It Anyway?" This live, 3-hour satellite/Internet broadcast will provide an overview of opportunities that can help your organization prepare to work with persons suffering from mental illness in jails. (NIC)
 
Guidance for Managing Jail Design and Construction
Application deadline: June 19, 2009
Managing Jail Design and Construction introduces participants to project management and clarifies their roles and responsibilities in relation to the development, design, and construction of a new jail. The program will help participants take an active role in managing day-to-day activities, resolving problems, and making decisions related to the design and construction process. (NIC)
 
Leadership Training for Women in Corrections
Application deadline: June 14, 2009
Correctional Leadership for Women provides the opportunity for women from two or more states to expand their knowledge base in corrections by learning about other systems. The program supports personal goal setting by using an assessment instrument, experiential exercises, and personal coaching. Experienced correctional leaders and faculty will present current leadership topics. (NIC)
 
National Association of Youth Courts Announces Training
On June 7-9, 2009, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the National Association of Youth Courts will conduct its Share, Learn, and Connect Regional Training Conference. Topics to be addressed include the recruitment and training of volunteers, building relationships with schools, data collection and evaluation, and sustainable funding. (OJJDP)
 
Register for Safe and Drug-Free Schools Conference
On August 3-5, 2009, the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools will hold its 2009 National Conference in National Harbor, Maryland. The conference will address issues related to civic and character education, crisis planning, mental and physical health, substance abuse, and violence prevention. (OJJDP)
 
Register for Upcoming NIJ Conference
The NIJ Conference 2009 will be held June 15-17, 2009, in Arlington, Virginia. It is designed for researchers and students interested in criminal justice, policymakers responsible for shaping public safety or social services, and practitioners in criminal justice who are interested in technology and DNA. There is no cost to attend the conference. (NIJ)
 
Register To Attend Victim Law Conference
The National Crime Victim Law Institute's annual Crime Victim Law & Litigation Conference will be held June 30 to July 1, 2009, in Portland, Oregon. OVC scholarships are available to help defray the cost of attending the conference. (OVC)
 
Training Available for Jail Administrators
Application deadline: June 19, 2009
This training program, Jail Administration, focuses on key elements in effective jail administration, including risk management; use of jail standards; development of and compliance with policies and procedures; inmate behavior management; determination of staffing needs; workforce development; systematic approaches to fire, safety, and sanitation; and ongoing operational assessment.
