The Victim Assistance Professional Development Fellowship Program will support outreach activities in four categories: victim assistance and compensation, tribal communities, underserved crime victims, and evidence-based training and technical assistance. NIJ is accepting applications for the Building and Enhancing Criminal Justice Researcher-Practitioner Partnerships solicitation. NIJ is interested in funding multiple projects in support of criminal justice researcher-practitioner partnerships as well as capturing, in detail, relevant accounts of previous and current criminal justice researcher-practitioner collaborations. The National Institute of Corrections, in partnership with the National Sheriffs' Association, is soliciting proposals to facilitate planning and delivery of training for first-term sheriffs through the National Sheriffs' Institute. Awardees will work closely with the NIC Jails Division to review and assess current training, revise curricula, and coordinate training delivery during the project. (NIC)

"Smart Radio for Police" (NCJ 224253, 2 pp.) describes two related developments in radio technology: software-defined radio and cognitive radio. With the advances in digital electronics over the past few decades, radios have more digital parts and are therefore more like computers. These radios are much less expensive and more versatile than analog radios. (NIJ)

The "ADAM II 2008 Annual Report" (NCJ 226970, 147 pp.) on adult and juvenile arrestees provides an overview of the revised Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program (ADAM), its methodology and data collection process, and detailed site-by-site tables summarizing results from each of the 10 participating cities. Through expanded coordination between Congress, state and local authorities, and the Government of Mexico, a comprehensive "National Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy" (NCJ 226790, 77 pp.) has been released. This strategy focuses on stemming the inbound flow of illegal drugs from Mexico and addresses the role of the outbound flow of illegal cash and weapons in sustaining drug cartels. (ONDCP)

Through funding from the National Institute of Corrections, "Improving Outcomes for People with Mental Illnesses under Community Corrections Supervision: A Guide to Research-Informed Policy and Practice" (ACCN 023634, 60 pp.) has been released. This guide provides information for policymakers about people with mental illnesses who are under community corrections supervision and discusses the type and effectiveness of strategies designed to respond to this population. "Making Arrests in Domestic Violence Cases: What Police Should Know" (NCJ 225458, 2 pp.) provides recommendations for law enforcement officers who work with domestic violence cases and want to improve the effectiveness of arrests, conserve police resources, and increase conviction rates. (NIJ)

The June 2009 issue of "Community Policing Dispatch" (NCJ 227182) includes articles about the Miami-Dade Police Department's response to mortgage fraud and Arizona's strategy for combating methamphetamine distribution and abuse. The Council of State Governments Justice Center has released "Law Enforcement Responses to People with Mental Illnesses: A Guide to Research-Informed Policy and Practice." The guide examines law enforcement interactions with people who have mental illnesses and translates the findings to help policymakers and practitioners develop safe and effective interventions. "Healing the Invisible Wounds: Children's Exposure to Violence" helps parents and other caregivers understand the potential impact of exposure to violence on the development of their children. The guide provides practical and age-specific recommendations for supporting the healing process. (OJJDP)

The National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children will host a webinar, "Drugs of Abuse in Pregnancy and the Effect on the Fetus and Child," on June 17, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. ET. Dr. Jennifer Lowry, a pediatrician, clinical pharmacologist, and medical toxicologist at the Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri, will conduct the session. The Florida Regional Community Policing Institute at St. Petersburg College, with support from BJA, has launched In Harm's Way: Law Enforcement Suicide Prevention. This Web site provides an online toolkit, training information, and other resources designed to prevent suicide among law enforcement officers. (BJA)

On June 24, 2009, in recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, OVC will conduct a Web Forum Guest Host Session on best practices for assisting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexed, and queer (LGBTIQ) survivors of violence. Join Avy Skolnik from the New York City Anti-Violence Project, serving New York's LGBTIQ communities, at 2 p.m. ET for the discussion. (OVC)

On August 3-5, 2009, the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools will hold its 2009 national conference in National Harbor, Maryland. The conference will address issues related to civic and character education, crisis planning, mental and physical health, substance abuse, and violence prevention. (OJJDP)

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges will hold its annual national conference July 12-15, 2009, in Chicago, Illinois. The conference will focus on juvenile and family law topics, including custody and visitation, divorce, child abuse and neglect, truancy, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, and substance abuse. The National Professional Training Conference on Responding to Crime Victims with Disabilities will be held September 30 to October 2, 2009, in Denver, Colorado. This OVC-funded conference, hosted by the National Center for Victims of Crime and the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies, offers educational opportunities to help you better assist crime victims with disabilities. Community Team Scholarships of up to $5,000 are available.
