Bill Signed To Prevent Underage Drinking

Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act (the STOP Act) establishes a federal coordinating committee to prevent underage drinking and authorizes a national media campaign, new grant programs, and research to combat underage drinking. (OJJDP)

 
January Is National Mentoring Month

Pass it on. Become a Mentor. is the theme for National Mentoring Month, which is being observed in January 2007. This year's campaign goal is to recruit volunteer mentors to work with young people from underprivileged backgrounds to help them reach their full potential. (OJJDP)

 
Serving Victims of Stalking

In recognition of National Stalking Awareness Month, OVC will present an online Web Forum Guest Host session with Michelle Garcia, Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime Stalking Resource Center, on serving stalking victims. Application Deadline: February 15, 2007
OVW is accepting applications for the FY 2007 Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, Stalking, and Child Abuse Enforcement Assistance Program. This program is designed to enhance the safety of victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and child victimization by supporting projects uniquely designed to address and prevent those crimes in rural jurisdictions. Funding for Tribal Governments Program Available

Letter of Intent Deadline: February 13, 2007
Grants.gov Registration Deadline: February 13, 2007
Application Deadline: February 20, 2007
OVW is accepting applications for the FY 2007 Grants to Indian Tribal Governments Program. This program provides funding to Indian tribal governments to help them respond to American Indian and Alaska Native victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. (OVW)

 
Joint NIDA-NIJ Initiative Targets Meth Markets

Letter of Intent Deadline: January 23, 2007, 5 p.m. ET
Application Deadline: February 23, 2007, 5 p.m. ET
The Joint NIDA-NIJ Initiative for Research on Retail Markets, which focuses on methamphetamine markets, seeks research that integrates epidemiology with behavioral and economic studies of the composition and dynamics of drug markets, including the manufacture, sale, and use of drugs. (NIJ)

Federal Criminal Justice System Statistics Detailed

"Compendium of Federal Justice Statistics, 2004" (NCJ 213476) (132 pp.) presents national-level statistics describing characteristics of persons processed and the distribution of case processing outcomes at each major stage of the federal criminal justice system. Interactive Reentry Housing Options Tool Available

The Council of State Governments launched a reentry Web-based tool to help users learn about different reentry housing options available for individuals who are released from prison or jail. The chart compares housing types on several dimensions, including funding sources, availability in the community, length of stay, and potential barriers. (BJA)

 
Intimate Partner Violence Released

Intimate Partner Violence in the United States (NCJ 210675). This new Web site examines fatal and nonfatal violence by intimates (current or former spouses, girlfriends, or boyfriends). It includes victim characteristics such as race, sex, age, income, and ethnicity. It also includes data on murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault that were experienced by males and females 12 years or older. (BJS)

"Justicia Penal Siglo XXI: Una seleccion de Criminal Justice 2000" (NCJ 213798), the Spanish version of "Criminal Justice 2000" (Volumes 1-4), is now available in CD-ROM format. This four- volume series examines the influence of research on current and future policies and practices. Conference Addresses School and Community Crime Prevention

On March 21-24, 2007, in Denver, Colorado, the 18th National Youth Crime Prevention Conference and International Forum will be held. Youth, their adult allies, and other practitioners can participate in a Town Meeting, the Youth Exploring Solutions Forum, workshops, professional development seminars, intensive institutes, and briefings on proven and promising practices. NIJ To Hold Annual Conference in July

The 14th Annual NIJ Conference, to be held July 23-25, 2007, in Arlington, Virginia, is designed to provide criminal justice information for those who can use it most: researchers interested in criminal justice, policymakers responsible for shaping public safety or social services, practitioners in criminal justice, and students interested in criminal justice issues. On January 18, 2007, from 2 to 4 p.m. ET, OJJDP will cosponsor the broadcasting of the national videoconference Addressing the Needs of Juvenile Status Offenders and Their Families. Spotlight on NIJ's Crime Mapping Conference Agenda

The agenda for the Ninth Crime Mapping Research Conference will include workshops, panel presentations, and plenary sessions, including a session that addresses the "Coming Wave of GPS." The conference will also include a map competition and preconference workshops and will provide networking opportunities for researchers and practitioners. (NIJ)

 
Trace Evidence Symposium-Call for Papers

NIJ and the FBI Laboratory Division are accepting abstracts for papers to be presented at the Trace Evidence Symposium, to be held August 13-16, 2007, in Clearwater Beach, Florida. The Symposium will offer technical workshops for experienced and new practitioners and will provide information on education, standards, and accreditation among other topics.
