Addressing Cases With Missing or Unidentified Victims

In recognition of National Missing Children's Day, join an OVC Web Forum discussion about cases in which a victim is missing or unidentified. Senior Agent Laurie Caldwell, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and Team Adam member and City Administrator Bob Lowery, O'Fallon, Missouri, will cohost the session on May 23, 2007, at 2 p.m. ET. Providing Peer Support to Disaster Survivors

Join Stephanie Frogge and Helga West on May 29, 2007, at 2 p.m. ET, for an OVC Web Forum Guest Host session on providing peer support to disaster survivors. Ms. Frogge is the Director of Survivor Services for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors and Ms. West is Cofounder and President of Witness Justice. (OVC)

 
Funding Opportunities
 
Apply Now for HOPE Grant

This OVC grant is available to grassroots community-based and faith-based victim service organizations and coalitions to improve outreach and services to crime victims through support of program development, networking, coalition building, and service delivery. Funds may be used to develop program literature, train advocates, and recruit volunteers. (OVC)

 
Funding for Tribal Governments Program Available

Application deadline: June 8, 2007
COPS is accepting applications for the FY 2007 Tribal Resources Grant Program. This program will enhance law enforcement infrastructure and community policing efforts in tribal communities. Up to $15 million is available to all federally recognized tribes with established police departments. (COPS)

 
Grants To Help Eliminate Forensic Evidence Backlog

Application deadline: June 19, 2007
NIJ is seeking applicants for the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program. This initiative provides funding to improve forensic science and medical examiner services and to eliminate backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence. States may apply for both base (formula) and competitive funds. Units of local government may apply for competitive funds. (NIJ)

 
Reducing DNA Analysis Backlog

Application deadline: June 14, 2007
Funds are available for the Convicted Offender and/or Arrestee DNA Backlog Reduction Program (In-House Analysis and Data Review). This program supports States with existing accredited laboratories that conduct DNA analysis of convicted offender and/or arrestee DNA samples to reduce their backlog of such samples through in-house analysis and data review of DNA profiles generated by fee-for-service vendors from DNA database samples. "DNA: Critical Issues for Those Who Work with Victims" (NCJ 211970) raises awareness regarding cases that include DNA evidence. This DVD addresses the collection and preservation of evidence, what victims can expect as the case moves forward, victim notification at points during the process, victim involvement and participation in the process, and cold case investigations. DVD Now Available With Spanish Subtitles

"Como Recuperarse de sus Lesiones Relacionadas con el Delito (Recovering From Your Crime-Related Injuries)" (NCJ 215732) provides seriously injured crime victims with general information about the criminal justice system. It includes strategies to cope with the negative emotions that often accompany victimization. (OVC)

 
New DVD Addresses Victims With Disabilities

"Victims with Disabilities: The Forensic Interview—Techniques for Interviewing Victims with Communication and/or Cognitive Disabilities" (NCJ 212894) provides specific guidelines for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, victim advocates, forensic interviewers, and others to use when interviewing individuals with communication and/or cognitive disabilities. A companion discussion guide, which includes a glossary of terms and concepts used in the film, accompanies this DVD. (OVC)

 
New E-Publication Highlights Faith-Based Victim Assistance

"Building Victim Assistance Networks With Faith Communities" (NCJ 215201) offers information for victim service providers seeking to engage faith communities in serving crime victims. This publication focuses on lessons learned from the Faith Community Initiative developed through the OVC-funded Vermont Victim Services 2000 demonstration project. (OVC)

 
Report Offers Guidelines on Emergency Preparedness

"Guidelines for Pandemic Emergency Preparedness Planning: A Road Map for Courts" (NCJ 217677, 36 pp.) encourages court planners throughout America to consider possible issues the court may face and how to solve them in advance of a pandemic. Videos Now Available in DVD Format

"Serving Crime Victims With Disabilities" (NCJ 213366) presents two award-winning videos in a new user-friendly format. "Meet Us Where We Are" offers first-person accounts of how crime affects people with disabilities and provides information about crime victims' rights. "The Time Is Now" helps crime victim service providers reach out and serve people with disabilities. (OVC)

 
Whites, Blacks, Hispanics Stopped at Similar Rates

"Contacts between Police and the Public, 2005 " (NCJ 215243, 14 pp.) presents data over a 12-month period on the nature and characteristics of face-to-face contacts between residents of the U.S. and the police. IXimager Test Results Available

"Test Results for Digital Data Acquisition Tool: IXimager (Version 2.0, Feb-01 2006)" (NCJ 217678, 121 pp.). This publication documents the results of IXimager (a noncommercial, restricted-use, law-enforcement-only, evidence production tool) by test assertion, describes the testing environment, provides an interpretation of the test results, and includes test results summary log files for numerous test cases. Conference Addresses Youth Access to Alcohol

On August 2-4, 2007, in Orlando, Florida, the Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center will host the National Leadership Conference. The conference will highlight communities and initiatives that have successfully implemented science-, performance-, and data-driven strategies to support the reduction of youth access to alcohol. Conference Focuses on Information Sharing

BJA, in cooperation with SEARCH, The National Consortium for Justice Information and Statistics, will be hosting a Regional Information Sharing Conference on June 3-4, 2007, in Jacksonville, Florida. State and local agency leaders, policymakers, project managers, and technical staff will have the opportunity to network and to learn about various justice information sharing initiatives. (BJA)

 
Institute Offers Law-Related Training for Secondary Educators

On June 25-26, 2007, in Chicago, Illinois, OJJDP will sponsor the National Law-Related Education Institute for Secondary Educators under its Youth for Justice initiative. The institute will help teachers in grades 9-12 gain a deeper understanding of best practices in law-related education. (OJJDP)

 
Training Session Examines Identity Theft

Identity Theft: Supporting Victims’ Financial and Emotional Recovery will be held June 26-27, 2007, in Tampa, Florida. This OVC workshop will teach victim service professionals how to assist victims in self-advocacy and how and when to intervene effectively in the recovery process. Topics include the different types of identity theft and who to turn to for help. (OVC)
