Grants Fund Student Drug Testing Programs

The U.S. Department of Education and ONDCP announce awards totaling $8.6 million in federal grants for schools to implement random student drug testing programs. Drug testing emphasizes early intervention, treatment, community action, and prevention efforts in keeping youth away from the damaging effects of drugs. (ONDCP)

 
Presenters for Community Corrections Conference Needed

Deadline: December 15, 2006
NLECTC announces a call for presenters for the 8th Annual Innovative Technologies for Community Corrections Conference, to be held June 4-6, 2007, in St. Louis, Missouri. The conference will focus on four main topics: electronic monitoring, drug and alcohol testing, information technology, and management issues. (NIJ)

 
ONDCP Announces NIDA's CJ Population Treatment Guidelines

"Principles of Drug Abuse Treatment for Criminal Justice Populations" from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, outlines proven components for successful treatment of drug abusers who have entered the criminal justice system. This publication can be ordered from the NIDA publications catalog. Requests for more than 10 copies may be directed to Brian Marquis at Bmarquis@nida.nih.gov. Not available from NCJRS. (ONDCP)

Accepting Applications for Weed and Seed Grant

Deadline: January 9, 2007
CCDO FY 07 Weed and Seed Program Guide and Application Kit: Continuation Sites is now available. The Weed and Seed Program furthers DOJ's mission by promoting an innovative, comprehensive, multiagency approach to combating violent crime, drug use, and gang activity in high-crime neighborhoods. Capital Case Litigation Initiative Seeking Grant Applicants

Deadline: January 9, 2007
Capital Case Litigation Initiative provides high-quality training and technical assistance on death penalty issues to attorneys and judges who litigate death penalty cases. This training and technical assistance will help ensure reliable jury verdicts and minimize post-conviction litigation. (BJA)

 
Funding Offered for Community Corrections Supervision Evaluation

Deadline: January 3, 2007
NIJ seeks applications for research to evaluate the effectiveness of electronic monitoring of moderate to high-risk offenders under supervision to improve policy and practice in the area of community corrections supervision. Of particular interest are GPS or other tracking technologies that allow wide-area active or passive continuous monitoring for managing serious and violent offenders. (NIJ)

 
Funds Available for Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs

Deadline: January 11, 2007
BJA is accepting applications to help prevent and detect the diversion and abuse of pharmaceutical controlled substances, particularly at the retail level where no other automated information collection system exists. The program focuses on providing help for states that want to establish a prescription drug monitoring program. (BJA)

 
FY 2007 SAVIN Program Funding Available

Deadline: December 21, 2006
Developing and Enhancing Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) Programs helps protect crime victims from further victimization and ensures that victims' legal rights are being honored. BJA is pleased to announce the acceptance of applications for implementing SAVIN programs. (BJA)

 
NIJ Research and Evaluation Program Seeks Applicants

Deadline: January 30, 2007
Funding is available for research and evaluation on the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elderly individuals, older women, and residents of residential care facilities. Priority research areas include studies that identify and explore forensic markers of abuse, evaluate programs, examine risk and protective factors, and explore the nature, incidence, and prevalence of neglect. "School-Based Partnerships: A Problem-Solving Strategy" (NCJ 216230) (35 pp.) focuses on three School-Based Partnership sites and their use of the SARA problem-solving process (Scanning, Analysis, Response, and Assessment) to address specific issues in their schools: students and teachers feeling threatened, illegal drug sales, and truancy. Juvenile Justice Center Releases Special Project Bulletins

With support from OJJDP, the National Center for Juvenile Justice has published three bulletins under its Special Projects Series: "Guide to the State Juvenile Justice Profiles," "The Importance of Timely Case Processing in Non-Detained Juvenile Delinquency Cases," and "How Does the Juvenile Justice System Measure Up? New OVC Video Series Available

The five-tape Voices of Victims video series features salient issues raised by crime victims regarding their experiences. Topics discussed include the need for a constitutional amendment, financial assistance, working with criminal justice professionals, victim notification rights, and the unique issues encountered in Indian Country. Spanish Version of OVC Fact Sheet Released

To better serve non-English-speaking people in the United States, OVC released a Spanish version of "Victims of Crime Act Crime Victims Fund." This fact sheet provides information about the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Crime Victims Fund and the various grant programs (formula and discretionary) that are funded using VOCA dollars. (OVC)

DNA Grantees Workshop Merges With NIJ Conference

This year's DNA Grantees Workshop will be held in conjunction with the 14th Annual NIJ Conference, which is planned for July 23-25, 2007, in Arlington, Virginia. The conference will showcase what works, what doesn't, and which research is promising; new developments in public safety technology; and the benefits of effective evidence-based policies and practices. Ohio Conference To Address Prevention Issues

On December 5-7, 2006, the Ohio Prevention and Education Conference will be held in Columbus. Objectives include facilitating the application of best practices in violence and substance abuse prevention and raising awareness of endeavors to create safe schools and communities. (OJJDP)

 
VIPS and Disaster Response Training

BJA and the International Association of Chiefs of Police have developed a new Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) training course, "VIPS and Disaster Response." This free introductory training course provides information about integrating volunteers into a law enforcement agency's plan for natural disasters, public health crises, and other emergencies.
