2010 NCVRW Community Awareness Project Funding Available

Application deadline: October 26, 2009
The National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators, through a grant from the Office for Victims of Crime, is seeking proposals for innovative and collaborative projects to raise public awareness of victims' rights and services in local communities during National Crime Victims' Rights Week (April 18-24, 2010). The Office of National Drug Control Policy announces the Women, Girls and Substance Abuse Web page. This resource includes statistics about substance use among women and girls, a description of ONDCP initiatives and a recent outreach effort, and frequently asked questions in various subject areas. Helping Children Exposed to Domestic Violence

On October 26, 2009, at 2 p.m. ET, in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, OVC will conduct a Web Forum Guest Host Session on best practices for helping children exposed to domestic violence. Join Sherry Hamby, Ph.D., coauthor of the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire, and Miriam Berkman, J.D., M.S.W., coordinator of the Child Development-Community Policing Program’s Domestic Violence Intervention Project. National Needs Assessment Survey Now Online
The National Training and Technical Assistance Needs Assessment Survey was developed to assess the needs of the victim services community. OVC encourages all victim service professionals to complete the online survey. Your input is vital in developing and designing new training opportunities. New Site Promotes Successful Reentry
The Council of State Governments Justice Center has launched the National Reentry Resource Center, an initiative designed to advance the safe and successful return of individuals from prisons and jails to their communities. This initiative provides comprehensive resources and support to help reduce recidivism and strengthen neighborhoods and families. (BJA)
 
Conferences and Trainings
 
Administering the Small and Medium-Sized Jail

NIC and the Kansas Jail Association are cosponsoring Administering the Small and Medium-Sized Jail, a training program to be held November 16-20, 2009, at the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Center in Salina, Kansas. Topics to be discussed include action planning, managing risk, developing and assessing policies and procedures, managing inmate behavior, and assessing jail operations. (NIC)

Apply now for National Victim Assistance Academy V, to be held February 28-March 5, 2010, in Portland, Oregon. Continuing Education Units will be awarded to participants who complete all of the requirements of the Foundation-Level Training, Professional Skill-Building Institute, or Leadership Institute. Conference Features Strategic Training on Youth Courts

On November 8-11, 2009, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, the National Association of Youth Courts will hold its annual conference, Youth Courts USA: Celebrating Achievements; Envisioning the Future. Trainers will provide information on how to develop a youth court and how to enhance the effectiveness of youth courts. (OJJDP)

 
Conference Focuses on Developing Relationships
The 21st Annual Multi-Jurisdictional Conference will be held November 4-6, 2009, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This conference focuses on developing stronger relationships between tribal and nontribal law enforcement agencies. The conference will highlight the improvement of working relationships with social service agencies, the court system, educators, gaming security personnel, and community leaders. (BJA)
 
Conference To Demonstrate Personal Protection Technologies

The Personal Protective Equipment 2009 Conference, Exhibition, and Training will be held November 17-19, 2009, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The conference will highlight emerging technologies in the area of personal protective equipment and will include an exhibition of new technologies, a seminar series on standards and next-generation tools, workshops, and roundtable discussions.
