The Republic of Korea has a crime victim compensation program to provide financial compensation for victims of violent crime.

Eligibility Requirements

Report to police. Yes, without unreasonable delay.

Filing period. Within 1 year from the day the applicant reports the crime and 5 years from the day the crime is committed.

Foreign citizen eligibility. Foreign nationals, including tourists, who have a proper visa to stay in the Republic of Korea and who are not in contravention of a limit of stay (if any) in force against them at the time of the crime are eligible to apply.

Procedures

Application forms can be obtained from police stations or prosecutor offices at the Public Service Center. When the criminal incident, as stated by the victim or applicant, has been investigated and confirmed by the police or prosecutor, the application will be processed and a decision will be made as to whether compensation is payable.

Benefits and Award Limits

Disability relief funds 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 won. Family relief funds 10,000,000 won.

Emergency awards. Disability relief funds 1,000,000 won. Family relief funds 2,000,000 won.

Funding sources. The program is funded by the Republic of Korea.
