Gangs - Training and Technical Assistance

The following training and technical assistance opportunities are a sample of those available through nationally recognized agencies and associations.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) Gang Prevention/Intervention Through Targeted Outreach
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) has developed a special gang prevention and intervention initiative targeting youth ages 6-18. Through referrals from schools, courts, law enforcement, and community youth service agencies, the tested and proven Targeted Outreach program identifies and recruits delinquent or at-risk youth into club programs and activities. The initiative is sponsored by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Gang Awareness Training Education (GATE)
GATE is a school based anti-gang educational program in which the goal is to de-mystify the gangs and the gang subculture to young people. GATE targets grades 5th through 8th.

Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program
The G.R.E.A.T. Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum. The program’s primary objective is prevention and is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.

Join Together On-Line
Join Together supports community-based efforts to reduce, prevent, and treat substance abuse across the country. In 1996, Join Together broadened its scope to include gun violence prevention, supported by a grant from the Joyce Foundation.

National Gang Crime Research Center (NGCRC)
The center functions as a nonprofit independent agency. It carries out research on gangs and gang members, disseminates information through publications and reports, and provides training and consulting services.

National Youth Gang Center (NYGC)
The purpose of the center is to expand and maintain the body of critical knowledge about youth gangs and effective responses to them. The center helps State and local jurisdictions collect, analyze, and exchange of information on gang-related demographics, legislation, literature, research, and promising program strategies.

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC)
The mission of NTTAC is to promote the use of best practices and support the delivery of high quality training and technical assistance that reflect the diversity of populations within the United States. NTTAC accomplishes this mission by working with the juvenile justice field to facilitate access to training and technical assistance resources and by working with providers to build training and technical assistance capacity.

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Strategic Planning Tool
The OJJDP Strategic Planning Tool was developed to assist in assessing a community’s gang problem and planning strategies to deal with it. Although originally created for cities participating in the OJJDP Gang Reduction Program, the tool can be used by any community.
