Youth Courts
In communities across the United States, youth courts are becoming components of the juvenile justice system. While jurisdictions may call their programs different names (youth court, teen court, or peer court), the guiding philosophy for the programs is the same: hold juvenile offenders accountable for their actions, educate youth about the legal and judicial systems, and empower youth to be active in their communities.
Youth courts are the result of collaboration among the judiciary, law enforcement, juvenile probation, social service agencies, educational agencies, local organizations, and youth themselves. They teach youth the consequences of poor choices, while also rewarding responsible behavior.
September has been designated National Youth Court Month. In recognition of this designation, NCJRS presents this online compilation of resources on the topic. Select the options at right to learn more about youth courts.
