Although nine Federal agencies are involved in international narcotics control and enforcement, major responsibilities are assigned to three agencies. The Bureau of International Narcotics Matters develops, coordinates, and implements the overall U.S. strategy. It enlists the cooperation and support of foreign governments through diplomatic ties, assisting in crop control and interdiction, training foreign personnel, and providing technical assistance. The Drug Enforcement Administration provides training and technical assistance to foreign law enforcement personnel and participates in collecting and sharing intelligence information. The Agency for International Development addresses drug problems in narcotic-producing developing countries through an awareness program and special projects. Major recipients of these efforts have included Latin America, East Asia, and Southwest Asia. Appendixes provide detailed program and budget information. 6 tables.
