Abstract
The utility of forfeiture in reducing the profitability of drug trafficking is discussed. Seizure and forfeiture activities of drug law enforcement agencies are delineated, and lists of such seizures are provided. The value of seized and forfeited items, the manner in which they are processed, and the distribution of the resulting assets are described. Issues related to the forfeiture of defense attorney fees and the impact of such forfeiture on the criminal justice system are discussed. Finally, the use of some seized assets in drug education, prevention, and treatment is advocated. The text of the forfeiture provisions and of bills to authorize the use of funds for drug abuse-related programming are provided.
