An attitude of caring, combined with the skills that ensure that a school is safe and productive, is the common quality in the 10 principals who have received special recognition in the 'Principals of Leadership' program.
Abstract
The program is sponsored in 1988 by the National School Safety Center, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The schools were located in a variety of locations and faced the same types of discipline problems. They also placed high priority on remedying these problems, recognizing that unless schools are safe and students feel secure, learning doesn't really have a chance. The honorees are principals of schools in West Bloomfield, Mich., Changler, Ariz., Washington, D.C., Bronx, New York City, Lubbock, Tex., Westville Correctional Center, Ind., Glendale, Ariz., West Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Whiteville, Tenn.
