Students exposed to LRE programs are less likely than others the same age to engage in delinquent behavior. Factors contributing to LRE success are content, good teaching methods, and high student participation. The LRE curriculum introduces students to the foundations of a free, democratic society, and to discussions on the concepts of freedom, authority, justice, privacy, and equality. Students particularly relate to studies of juvenile law, contracts, rights and responsibilities, police, and courts. One theory suggests that young people turn to delinquent behavior because they do not feel connected with society; LRE provides a way to reconnect with society in a positive way.
