This monograph documents a variety of initiatives, including several among Native American tribal communities, that focus on preventing crime and its consequences through community revitalization.
Abstract
Among the problems targeted by the programs are neighborhood blight, drug trafficking and related crime, and inappropriate or ineffective jail sentences for nonviolent offenders. The programs are especially concerned with the significant population of youth at risk for school dropout, delinquency, and violent crime. Although the programs are organized by State, they tend to respond to local problems with local resources. Virtually all can be replicated in other communities, either in whole or in part. The approaches represented by the programs involve bringing together various elements of the community, and many involve forging partnerships between police and neighborhood residents and implementing other aspects of community policing. Some of the programs demonstrate ways neighborhoods are working together to respond to threats to their safety and the well-being of their children. The 24 programs included in the monograph are funded under Byrne Formula or Discretionary Grant programs.
