This guide for police unit commanders contains best practice recommendations for their management and support of officers exposed to child pornography images as part of their work.
Abstract
This guide is needed because research has shown that individuals who are required to view images or videos of child sexual abuse as part of their work may experience particular stressors related to such exposure. Many of these stressors can be managed by providing a healthy work environment that includes an effective support system. Support for individuals working child pornography cases should be provided by mental health professionals who understand the stressors experienced by such personnel. Features of the psychological impact of viewing child pornography images are outlined in this guide. Recommendations and guidelines pertain to workspace considerations, preparation for new employees, work flexibility, educating colleagues, and mental health providers. Information is provided on a 3-hour training program for individuals whose work exposes them to child pornography. Website addresses are listed for some professional organizations that may provide a list of mental health professionals in specific areas.
