This is a power-point presentation of a 3-hour training course entitled Supporting Heroes in Mental Health Foundational Training (SHIFT), which provides instruction in the need for and features of a support structure for criminal justice personnel exposed to images and videos of child pornography in the course of their investigative work or case processing.
Abstract
The objectives of the training are to explain the negative effects of such exposure and provide guidance in how to cope with and build resiliency to these negative effects. In explaining the adverse effects of exposure to child pornography in one's work, attention is given to the physiological effects and symptoms of chronic exposure, the physiology of stress, psychological effects, vicarious trauma, and the range of trauma. Topics addressed in coping and building resiliency are the development of workplace support, working with a mental health professional, encouraging friend and family support, and self-care techniques. Additional SHIFT training is described at the conclusion of the current training.
