This is a psychoeducational program for criminal justice personnel exposed to images of child pornography in the course of investigating or processing such cases, entitled Supporting Heroes In mental health Foundational Training (SHIFT).
Abstract
The training provides instruction in the negative effects of regular work-related exposure to child pornography, as well as how to cope with the adverse effects and build resiliency to such exposure. Instruction in the adverse effects of the exposure focuses on the physiology of stress, including chronic effects, as well as professional and personal factors that aggravate symptoms. The instruction in traditional coping strategies when dealing with these adverse effects focuses on simple denial, rationalization, sublimation, and reframing negative affects as being overworked or other conventional forms. Instruction in maladaptive coping strategies focuses on risk-taking behavior (e.g., alcohol abuse, affairs, and fast driving). Instruction in factors that can aid in a constructive response to these adverse effects addresses management awareness of the problem and appropriate supportive responses. In discussing a constructive management response, attention is given to mental health support and individual personal factors that must be addressed. Factors that reduce harm and build resiliency are discussed, including the importance of an exposed worker assuming personal responsibility for awareness of and appropriate action to address adverse work-related symptoms. The training concludes with a presentation of materials on good practices.
