RESEARCH ON PREPARATION OF PRE-SENTENCE REPORTS TO MAKE POSSIBLE MORE INFORMED SENTENCING BY THE CRIMINAL COURT JUDGE.
Abstract
THE DATA GATHERING PROCESS INCLUDES SELECTING CASES, DOCUMENTS USED, PRISON RELEASE DATES, MISSING SOURCES OF DATA, CODING PROCEDURES, CASE LOSS, AND DATA PROCESSING. RESEARCH DATA ARE TABULATED AND ANALYZED. THIS SYSTEM SEEMS TO HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON REDUCING DISPARITIES IN PRISON SENTENCES, AND THE PRE-SENTENCE REPORT TENDS TO IDENTIFY THOSE DEFENDANTS WHO, WITHOUT RISK, MAY BE PLACED IN COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATIVE PROGRAMS.
