THIS PAPER DEALS WITH A SERIES OF PROBLEMS RELATED TO COMPULSORY TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLISM.
Abstract
LAWS CONCERNING COMPULSORY TREATMENT AND THEIR DEVELOPMENT IN THE CZECHOSLOVAK SOCIALIST REPUBLIC ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHOR STUDIES MUTUAL RELATIONS OF ALCOHOLICS DURING COMPULSORY THERAPY, THEIR THERAPEUTIC MOTIVATION, RELATIONS BETWEEN ALCOHOLICS AND THERAPISTS, AND CHARACTER TRAITS OF CRIMINAL ALCOHOLICS. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GROUP OF TREATED ALCOHOLICS ARE INCLUDED. THE PAPER DISCUSSES DIFFERENT THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMS USED ON PATIENTS. IT NOTES THAT AN INTEGRAL PART OF COMPULSORY TREATMENT IS THE CONTINUED OBSERVATION OF PATIENTS AFTER THERAPY AND THEIR INCORPORATION INTO OUTPATIENT CARE. THE PAPER PRESENTS RESULTS FROM PRISONERS IN A 15-MONTH ANTIALCOHOLIC TREATMENT PROGRAM AT THE PILSEN-BORY CORRECTION PRISON. ANALYSIS OF A GROUP OF 328 COMPULSORY TREATMENT PATIENTS WHO WERE CONTROLLED AND ESTIMATED AFTER 1 AND 3 YEARS FOLLOWING TREATMENT IS PRESENTED. ONLY 14.8 PERCENT OF THE ALCOHOLICS ABSTAINED AFTER 3 YEARS. RECOMMENDATIONS PERTAINING TO COMPULSORY ANTIALCOHOLIC THERAPY CONCLUDE THE PAPER. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
