Abstract
Sections focus on State characteristics relating to crime, crime rates and arrests, narcotics trafficking and drug abuse, arson, white collar crime, and driving while intoxicated. In summary, the State had the second highest crime rate in the nation for 1978: 7,603.8 per 100,000 -- 49 percent higher than the national rate. However, since 1975, the State's crime rate has decreased 12 percent. The violent crime rate for Arizona municipalities was 67 percent higher than the rate for other U.S. municipalities, while a 135 percent difference existed between the State and national rural areas category. The State's combined property crime rate of 7,051.7 was 53 percent higher than the national average. Of the $74.5 million in property reported stolen, slightly more than $23.5 million was recovered. Arrest statistics show that the majority of those arrested for violent crimes are age 18 and above. Indian reservations accounted for 27 percent of the land, 5.8 percent of the population, and 16 percent of the reported crimes and arrests. The percentage of all arrests in the State attributed to direct drug violations was 7 percent. Finally, Arizona's rate for driving while intoxicated was 81 percent higher than the national rate. Data charts, graphs, and tables are provided and definitions of index crimes are appended.
