Abstract: The report describes in detail the survey methodology and data sources and limitations. Section I contains tables on 1980-1992 national trend data. In Section II, tables present 1992 justice expenditure and employment data; three tables present supplemental data such as population, personal income, and expenditure and employment data for all governmental functions. Within Section II, tables are arranged to show national estimates by type of government and type of justice activity; State and local estimates by type of justice activity, by State; and individual government functional detail for the State governments, 68 large counties, and 49 large cities. Within each of the Section II subsections, the expenditure tables are presented first, followed by employment and payroll tables. Section II concludes with tables that present "supplemental" information for the individual State and local governments displayed in earlier tables. The data presented there include total and per capita State personal income, three categories of government expenditure, and two categories of full-time equivalent employment. Appendix 1 contains definitions for concepts and terms used in this report. Appendix 2 describes significant differences between the 1971-79, 1985, 1988, and 1990 Justice Expenditure and Employment Surveys and the Justice Expenditure and Employment Extracts series. Appendix 3 presents relative standard errors associated with the sample-based data. 35 tables
