Abstract: The introduction provides a history of U.S. corrections statistics, along with definitions of common terms used in the tables and data sources. The first table presents the number of adults on probation, in jail, in prison, or on parole for 1980- 93, followed by a table that presents the estimated number of adults on probation, in jail, in prison, or on parole, as well as their percentage of the adult population, by sex and race for 1993. Another table presents the estimated number of adults under correctional supervision by sex and race, and the fourth table shows the percentage of adults under correctional supervision by sex and race. Two other tables show the estimated number of adults on probation, in jail, in prison, or on parole and their percentage of the adult population by State and the number of sentenced prisoners under State or Federal jurisdiction by sex and race for 1980-93. The seventh table presents the estimated number of sentenced prisoners under State or Federal jurisdiction per 100,000 resident population, 1980-93, followed by a table that provides the number of Hispanic prisoners under State or Federal jurisdiction for 1980-93. Remaining tables show the estimated number of prisoners in State custody by the most serious offense, 1980-93; the number of sentenced inmates in Federal prisons by the most serious offense, 1988-93; and admissions to State prisons by type of admission, 1980-93. Four figures show the number of white and black inmates in State and Federal prisons by sex, 1980-93; the number of sentenced prisoners per 100,000 residents by sex, 1980-93; the number of sentenced male prisoners per 100,000 male residents by race, 1980-93; and the number of prisoners in custody of State correctional authorities by offense, 1980-93. A section on capital punishment in 1993 provides data on prisoners under sentence of death by race, prisoners received from court under sentence of death, prisoners removed from death row by race, current death penalty statutes, and prisoners executed under civil authority in the United States for 1930-93.
