Annotation: This volume presents an overview of Federal criminal case processing during 1993, based on information from the Bureau of Justice Statistics Federal justice database.
Abstract: The compendium describes the progress of Federal criminal suspects through prosecution, pretrial release, adjudication, sentencing, and supervision and corrections. The tables include both individual and corporate cases, as well as both felonies and misdemeanors. The data reveal that approximately 63,800 defendants were prosecuted by United States attorneys in United States district courts or were processed in Federal courts of appeals. Approximately one-third of these defendants were prosecuted for drug law offenses. Eighty-six percent of the 64,640 defendants whose cases were terminated in Federal district courts in 1993 were convicted. Sixty-five percent of those convicted were sentenced to prison. At the end of the year, the Federal Bureau of Prisons held more than 82,000 prisoners, an increase of 11 percent over 1992. A total of 39,973 prisoners were released during 1993. Those released for the first time on their Federal sentence had served an average of 24 months. Figures, tables, and glossary
