  Annotation: Data on convictions and felony sentences in Federal and State courts reveal that in 1994 these courts convicted 911,842 persons of violent crimes, property crimes, drug law offenses, and other felonies.
  Abstract: Federal courts accounted for 4 percent of the national total. The number of felony convictions decreased 2 percent in State courts and 5 percent in Federal courts between 1992 and 1994. State and Federal courts together imposed prison sentences on 46 percent of all persons convicted of a felony in 1994. Federal courts sentenced 62 percent of felons to prison; State courts sentenced 45 percent of felons to prison. State and Federal courts together sentenced to prison 62 percent of the 167,000 felons convicted of a violent crime. The average prison sentence imposed was about 6 years in State courts and 6.5 years in Federal courts. Newly sentenced Federal prisoners are expected to serve an average of 5.5 years, compared to 2.5 years for newly sentenced State prisoners. Tables and figure
