Annotation: The Bureau of Justice Statistics has announced the establishment of its National Sex Offender Registry Assistance Program (NSOR-AP) for FY 1998 as a component of the National Criminal History Improvement Program.
Abstract: The NSOR-AP supports President Clinton's goal of establishing an effective national registry of convicted sex offenders and is designed to ensure accurate and complete information about sex offenders is made available to protect the public and prevent further victimization. Specifically, the program will help States ensure that State sex offender registries identify, collect, and properly disseminate relevant information and that States establish appropriate interfaces with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's national system so registry information on sex offenders can be obtained and tracked from one jurisdiction to another. The FY 1998 appropriation for NSOR-AP includes $25 million to support the national sex offender registry. Application and award processes to receive program funds are described, along with review and funding criteria. Information on application and administrative requirements and application forms are appended.
