Abstract: Highlights from this report include the following: in 2010, the overall prison population in the United States declined for the first time since 1972; half of State departments of corrections reported decreases in prison populations, with Rhode Island and Georgia showing the largest percentage decrease and California and Georgia having the largest decrease in absolute numbers; for the first time since 1977, prison releases exceeded prison admissions; in 2010, 51 percent of Federal prisoners were serving time for drug offenses, 35 percent were serving time for public order offenses, and less than 10 percent each were serving time for a violent and property offenses; and the sentenced male prison population decreased by 0.4 percent, while the sentenced female prison population decreased by 0.6 percent. This bulletin from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) presents data on the total number of prisoners in State and Federal correctional facilities for the year 2010. Data for this report were drawn from the BJS’s National Prisoner Statistics series, which collects information on prisoner counts and characteristics on an annual basis.
