Abstract: Concerning law enforcement, an essay surveys research and knowledge on the effects of alternative local drug-law-enforcement strategies, and another essay addresses international strategies for attacking drug supplies at their source or prior to their entering the United States. Regarding drug treatment, an essay reviews what is known about the effectiveness of the major drug-treatment modalities in relation to their effects on contemporaneous and later drug use as well as on contemporaneous and later crime. In addressing prevention, an essay surveys what is known about the effectiveness of school drug education programs. Other essays pertain to the social consequences of drug use. One essay examines the impact of drug dealing and drug abuse upon inner cities, and another considers the relation between intoxication and aggression. Other papers cover the technology and uses of drug testing in the criminal justice system, the interactions of drug abuse and criminality, and drug use by drug dealers and prostitutes.
