However, to enact additional restrictions on pornography or to prohibit it would be counterproductive. This criminalization would do little to reduce public demand for the product, would strengthen the role of organized crime, and would increase the already huge profits in the industry. Study data came from a review of the literature and from field studies of pornography operations in several parts of the United States. The research examined the law and research on pornography and its effects, the goods and services offered by the industry, and the characteristics of the retail pornography trade. It also considered the relationship between pornography and other forms of vice in two Pennsylvania cities, local and regional distribution networks, and the operations of the industry's leading figure. The characteristics of organized crime and their role in pornography are also outlined.
