This report documents the microlevel labor market and crime data collected by the Employment and Crime Project of the Vera Institute of Justice.
Abstract
Collected data cover labor market participation, arrests, periods of incarceration, and some demographic characteristics of a sample of 902 males predominantly arrested for felony offenses in Brooklyn, N.Y., during July and August, 1979. The labor market information, which was obtained in an interview at the time of the respondent's arrest, spans 2 years prior to the arrest. Histories of prior arrests and other criminal justice data collected in 1980 cover the same 2 years and 1 year following the sampled arrest. Additional data collected from a subsample of 152 participants 1 year after the initial interview cover labor market items, social and neighborhood contexts, and perceptions of the risk of doing selected crimes. In addition to describing data sets and study design, this report describes the construction or choice of data items, the administration of interviews and attrition, coding procedures, and data limitations. Appended codebooks.
