This booklet provides instruction in the selection of anatomical dolls to assist in interviewing child sexual abuse victims and in using these dolls to elicit information on the abuse from the victim.
Abstract
Factors in selecting anatomical dolls, which have explicit sexual body parts, include their size, openings, the sexual body parts, characteristics of the doll material, skin tone, safety, face and hair, and washability. Problems in interviewing child sexual abuse victims include fear, vocabulary, embarrassment, and age. Preinterview preparation involves the gathering of background information, selecting interview tools, interviewing as a team, choosing a location, and initiating the interview. Aspects of the interview include introducing the dolls, using the dolls to obtain information, avoiding leading questions, closing the interview, following up, and taking good notes. Activities related to the interview are validating the child's information and preparing the child for the courtroom. The booklet includes commonly asked questions, two training exercises, and a list of interviewing 'do's' and 'don'ts.' An order form for dolls is included.
