A series of nine articles discusses various applications of computer technology to law enforcement.
Abstract
The first article reviews the character of computer crime and discusses the selection of police personnel for a computer crime unit. It deals with the computer crime victim and court presentation in computer crime cases. Articles on various uses of computers in law enforcement describe applications in the arrest/booking system of Black Hawk County, Iowa; the New York City Police Department's command and control during the 40th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly; the application of parallel processing techniques to automated fingerprint identification; computer use in police telecommunications; and the identification of altered vehicle identification numbers on stolen vehicles. Other topics discussed are microcomputer knowledge important for police managers and the police use of computer systems that parallel elements of human intelligence (artificial intelligence) in operations and training.
