The data came from 13 insurance companies and covered theft loss experience of 1985 models during their first year of availability, 1984 models during their first 2 years, and 1983 models during their first 3 years. Theft losses included both items from vehicles and the vehicles themselves. Different cars had widely varying theft losses, ranging from less than $0.50 per insured vehicle year to more than $225. European imports had the highest frequency of theft claims. Small and midsize domestic models had the lowest claim frequencies. Sports and specialty models had the highest overall theft losses, accounting for nearly 50 percent of the total dollars paid in theft claims. Among vans, pickups, and utility vehicles, the Jeep CJ-7 had the highest theft claim frequency in all 3 model years.
