The book focuses on Latina abuse victims because of the particular problems they have in obtaining appropriate social and legal services. After defining abuse and identifying some of its characteristics, the discussion turns to myths about battered women that keep many Latinas in abusive relationships. A discussion of why so many Latinas stay in an abusive relationship considers the restraints on leaving posed by children, relatives, Latino culture, and religious beliefs. Advice on how to get emergency help focuses on the services of hospitals and police and what can be expected from such services. Victim legal options discussed include protection orders, legal charges against the abuser, a divorce, and child support. The emotional state of the abused victim is profiled, and suggestions are offered for obtaining emotional support and guidance during and after the abusive relationship. The book addresses special problems encountered by abused Latinas, notably immigration status, no income, and language problems. Preventive advice is designed to keep prior abuse victims from entering another abusive relationship. The concluding chapter provides guidelines for persons providing help to abused Latinas.
