This article describes a model to guide the development and implementation of inservice training for correctional educators.
Abstract
The first task of the model is the development of the mission statement, which specifies the context in which the program operates, the responsibilities trainers have been assigned, and broad program goals and objectives. The next step is to define the general roles and functions that must be performed by those being trained. This is followed by the identification of competencies that correctional educators should have and the specification of training objectives and criteria for evaluating their accomplishment. Developers should then systematically review, select, and adapt appropriate instructional materials, texts, and audiovisuals to be used in the communication of training content. This is followed by the development of a program structure suitable for imparting the content to the trainees. Program implementation and management will be dictated by program structure and institutional constraints. The model's formative evaluation focuses on the products of the training program, the processes used to develop them, and the procedures for delivering instruction to the trainees. Results are used to make appropriate revisions before the materials or procedures are finalized. 23 references.
