This curriculum was developed for use by professionals who work with disabled persons and provides information about sexual abuse and its prevention for use by hearing impaired, blind, physically disabled, and mentally retarded adolescents.
Abstract
The curriculum can be presented to individuals or groups in special education classes, group homes, residential facilities, and other settings. An introductory section focuses on the vulnerability of disabled adolescents to sexual abuse. Background information is also provided on sexual abuse, its victims, the offenders, reporting, Minnesota laws, and community resources. The sexuality of disabled persons is also discussed. Additional sections explain the field testing of the curriculum, give guidelines on conducting a parent training session on preventing sexual abuse, give instructions for presenting the curriculum to students, and introduce the curriculum topics. Lesson plans for hearing impaired, physically disabled, blind, and mentally retarded adolescents are included. Modifications for younger students are also suggested. Appendixes present community resources, teacher guides, handouts, exercises, and posters. 69 references.
