A significant development in the firearms training at the center was the introduction of the transitional target system (TRANSTAR), which uses life-sized, multicolored targets and a one-half size target for fundamental marksmanship. The targets have enlarged scoring areas that promote 'area aiming' instead of pinpoint aiming. Since the introduction of the TRANSTAR system, other targets used include three-dimensional plastic other targets used include three-dimensional plastic targets, steel suspended targets, video projected scenarios, and mannequins wearing fiber optic, laser sensitive vests under their clothing. The courses include basic marksmanship instruction (stance, grip, sight alignment, and trigger control); the practical pistol course (firing from various distances); judgment pistol shooting (shoot/no shoot decisions); the reduced light course (simulation of various street lighting effects); and the decision reaction course (priority judgment about targets). Other courses focus on survival tactics using advanced shooting positions and available cover. Courses are also offered for shotgun firing and firearms instructor training.
