This booklet synthesizes current knowledge on the extent and effects of drug use by school-age youth and recommends proven strategies that parents, schools, communities, and youth can adopt to combat drug abuse.
Abstract
It begins with facts about child drug use and then outlines action plans. Recommendations directed toward parents focus on instilling responsibility, setting standards, providing consistent supervision, and recognizing drug use. Strategies suggested for schools cover assessing the extent of school drug use, setting and enforcing policy, implementing a kindergarten through 12th grade drug prevention curriculum, and involving the community. Other recommendations concern ways that students can learn about harmful effects of drugs, resist drug use, and influence peers. Broader community-based anti-drug strategies are detailed. Descriptions of successful programs accompany the recommendations. The booklet provides a model drug prevention curriculum, a survey of Federal laws relevant to school drug policies, and a resource section that describes specific drugs and their effects and lists sources of information. Graphs and references.
