Abstract
The Commission was established in 1974. It is a nonprofit, independent organization that administers the only national accreditation program for all components of adult and juvenile corrections. It works in conjunction with the American Correctional Association to develop and revise standards. The standards deal with the services, programs, administration and fiscal controls, physical plant, safety, sanitation, food services, rules and discipline, and supervision in corrections. Ten standards manuals deal with the various types of institutions. The accreditation process involves public and private agencies at the Federal, State, and local levels private agencies at the Federal, State, and local levels in the United States and Canada. All programs use the same accreditation process. All facilities sign a contract, pay accreditation fees, conduct a self-evaluation, and have a standards compliance audit by Commission consultants. After accreditation, programs submit annual certification statements to the Commission. A monitoring visit may take place during the initial 3-year accreditation period. Standards also cover the revocation of accreditation, reconsideration, and reaccreditation. Glossary and list of commission publications and services.
