A series of papers by specialists in intrafamily child sexual abuse discusses a conceptual framework for assessing such abuse and treatment approaches for incest.
Abstract
Papers on the conceptual framework for assessment include a presentation of an integrative conceptual framework that incorporates individual, family systems, and ecosystems in a clinical evaluation. Another paper provides a functional typology of incest families, with suggestions for incorporating this into an assessment scheme. A paper argues for the integration of medical assessment with the family assessment of incest cases. A model defining the four preconditions for child sexual abuse encompasses extrafamily and intrafamily child sexual abuse, and the concluding paper on assessment considers factors and patterns in child sexual abuse victims' reactions to their abuse. Papers focusing on treatment issues and techniques include an overview of an effective model for incest treatment which addresses ecosystems, family structure, and individual components. An article describes preparation for and the implementation of the 'apology' session in family-oriented incest treatment, and another presentation provides practical guidance for family therapists giving court testimony in incest cases. The concluding article summarizes the state-of-the-art in the assessment and treatment of incest and suggests future directions for research and clinical practice.
