In the initial study, Protestant religious affiliation and history of abuse as a child predicted volunteering for treatment, but not following through treatment. In the replication study, history of abuse and having witnessed maternal abuse predicted both volunteering and following through on accepting treatment. For both groups combined, abuse as a child predicted volunteering and following through, while witnessing maternal abuse was marginally related. Findings are discussed in terms of setting programmatic and social policies for motivating spouse abusers to accept treatment. 2 notes and 14 references. (Author abstract modified)
